The accepted documentation which proved Joseph was the son of son of Ephraim Hiram Squire and wife Sarah (probably Davis) may be found in Joseph's Civil War Pension file.
In an affidavit made by Judith Olmstead, mother of Phebe, she lists the children born of Phebe and Joseph. She then goes on to further state:
"...the said Joseph W. Squires, deceased, also Sarah Squires mother of the said deceased, and this officiant were the only persons present at the birth of the said Edgar E. Squires, and that the said Sarah Squires died on the 17th day of April 1864. And she further swears that said children are also the children of Phebe Squires, widow of the deceased."
This affidavit was accepted as documentation that Joseph as the son of Sarah, while there are other documents available which connect Sarah as the wife of Ephraim.
